Buying Guide
Everything to consider before buying camp slippers
1. Insulation
Although there are many types of insulation on the market, down, wool, sheepskin and synthetic are the major categories you will find. Synthetic insulation is generally easier to clean than down and wool – something to keep in mind if you plan to wear your slippers outside.
2. Sole traction
Rubber soles provide a better grip than leather, cork or nylon soles. However, some soles are reinforced with rubber in high friction areas to increase durability and grip.
3. Compressibility and weight
Since they are meant to be worn around the campsite, camping slippers are designed to be light and relatively compressible, so they take up little space in your backpack. Slippers with leather, hard rubber, or cork soles are less compressible and heavier than nylon ones. They will be more durable – if space is not a major issue, they’re also a good choice.
4. Durability
Slippers with rubber soles are definitely very durable. Leather and cork are also good options, although these materials offer less grip on slippery surfaces.
5. Versatility
Unless you choose a pair designed solely for home, most camping slippers are versatile enough to be worn outdoors. Thick-soled models like The North Face’s Traction Mules or Nuptse Mules will offer better protection from wet surfaces than leather mules or nylon-soled slippers.
Camping slippers FAQ
Q: What is a camping slipper?
A: Slippers designed for camping, or generally for outside the home, have a durable, waterproof sole that allows them to be worn outside.
Q: What is the purpose of hi-top slippers?
A: Hi-top slippers are meant to be slipped on in your tent or around the camp after a long day of hiking, climbing or skiing for better comfort, and to keep your feet warm after the effort.
Q: What is a vegan slipper?
A: Vegan slippers are made of materials from synthetic sources only. Wool, down, leather or other materials from animal sources are not vegan.
Q: Can you wash down slippers?
A: Like all down clothing, you can wash your down slippers with a special down cleaner and dry them in a tumble dryer to distribute the padding evenly.
Whether you wear them while camping, at home, or even for short trips around town, modern slippers are a far cry from the ones grandma used to knit. And while they’re still a cottage classic, we’re turning to insulated slippers with sturdy, grippy soles that offer more versatility for our various activities. That being said, The North Face, Baffin and Sorel will never replace the craftsmanship of our grandmothers…but hey, there’s a slipper for every occasion!
