But all of them will deliver the warmth, style, and comfort you need for the changing seasons. Each sweater is also well-made. Because there is absolutely no point making a list of our favourites that isn’t top quality.

And because looks matter, we’ve taken them seriously, too. So on top of sweaters made from great fabrics, you’ll see some of the best-looking pullovers out there.

A classic crewneck sweater

A definitive style, the Chase Sweatshirt is our favourite classic men's crewneck sweater.

This subtle and smooth pullover from Carhartt Work In Progress is literally worth its weight. A heavier cotton-poly 13-oz weave gives this long-sleeved crew some extra warmth. It also makes it extremely durable (a staple of Carhartt WIP goods). Expect this sweatshirt to last years and look just as good as when you bought it.

Heavy ribbing along the collar, hem, and cuffs ensures the Chase fits you correctly. It's also a true-to-size regular fit, so you won’t have to size up. Under the sturdy seams, flatlock stitching gives you absolute comfort. Go ahead, wear this heavyweight without an undershirt.

Like most Carhartt products, the Chase sweater comes in more subdued colours.

Our favourite wool sweater

This is Patagonia's first appearance on our list, but we’ll give you a hint: it isn’t their last. Few brands can live up to Patagonia's reputation for eco-friendly materials and designs. And this sweater is another product you can feel good about buying and wearing.

This stylish sweater is made from 71% recycled wool. Nylon and stretchy elastane up this top's durability. Add the 2x2 ribbing along the collar, hem, and cuffs and you get one proper-fitting garment.

Ultimately, this is a pullover that's amazingly soft and warm thanks to the wool blend. Plus, it keeps valuable lambswool out of landfills. Dress this Patagonia up for your next holiday get-together, or wear it over a button-down for some winter West Coast vibes

Patagonia's Iconic lightweight crewneck

What makes this sweater special is the fact that it's a workhorse. Patagonia's eco-friendly fleece fabric blend—with a touch of stretchy spandex—lasts for years without losing its soft feel or looks. Trust us when we say that you'll have this sweater forever.

Unlike a traditional crewneck, the P-6 Label Uprisal sweater has set-in shoulder seams. Most of the other tops on this list have a raglan style sleeve. So if you're a guy with broad shoulders, you might need to size up.

A crewneck designed in Montreal

Durable. Simple. Stylish. The men’s Regent sweatshirt by Montreal-based Vallier ticks these boxes and more, giving you some extra movement to boot.

Made from Cordura knit French terry fabric—a strong, yet soft poly-cotton blend—the Regent is built to last. Along with the classic stylings of a “normal” crewneck, you’ll notice the stretch side panels. These panels run under the arms and along the side of your torso, giving you some extra expansion and mobility when you’re on the go.

Vallier is all about the little details. When you first see the Regent, you’ll notice the Kelly green neck tape (which is comfy instead of abrasive against your neck). Also, the micro-ribbing at the cuffs, hem, and collar will feel extra-structured when you first pull it on.

Overall, the Regent is a new type of classic. It also has all the details you’d expect from a brand that bills itself as purveyors of ‘better urban living.

  • Finely-detailed
  • Cordura weave is top-notch
  • Stretch side panels for extra movement

  • Stretch panels might not be your thing
  • Classic’ fit is really a slim fit

Our favourite thermal crew sweater

The definitive layer of warmth. That's how we'd define this ruggedly smooth yet totally stylish thermal knit Filson sweatshirt.

The durable, waffle-knit Peruvian cotton is little on the stiff side upon first impression. That's because it's woven for strength and breathability. It'll break in and feel soft after a few wears and washes. Like all Filson goods, this sweater's heavyweight weave is made to withstand years of use.

Originally a hunting brand from the Pacific North-West, Filson has become the apparel of choice for those wanting rugged, high-quality men's clothing. We'd say that this heavyweight long-sleeve fits both urbanites and nature-enthusiasts' needs. Plus, its modest looks will give you a ‘strong, silent type’ impression.

  • Warm for its weight
  • Rugged Peruvian cotton weave
  • Reinforced seams
  • Outdoorsy vibes

  • Fits big (most Filson products do)
  • Narrow bottom hem looks less ‘sweater-y’ more ‘layer-y’

Champion's classic logowear crewneck

Function, style, and an athletic cut. What more could you want from a crewneck? This men's Champion Reverse Weave sweatshirt offers all the appeal of a timeless crew with some grown-up style points.

This vintage-esque pullover is reverse weave engineered. That means the heavy 12-oz cotton weave has a soft-brushed interior, which gives you some extra warmth and comfort against your skin. On the exterior, a tight-knitted design provides you with all the trappings of a modern crewneck.

In our opinion, the small script 'Champion' written at the chest—in the brand's vintage font—gets an A+ for branding. But ultimately you're getting classic Champion style that’ll last many miles.

Our favourite knit sweater

You're prepping your holiday party outfit, and you want a sweater to make an entrance? The men's Lada lambswool sweater has a premium knit and offers standout Scandinavian style.

The Swedish brand Fjällräven is renowned for its outdoors-focused hiking and trekking gear made of their famous G-1000 fabric. On this wool sweater, you'll find reinforcements at the front buttons in the G-1000 weave. You'll also get some classic arctic fox style in a leather logo fixed to the left shoulder.

Our favourite luxury sweater

Just as refined as the Ivy League school it’s named after, the Canada Goose Dartmouth sweater is all class and comfort.

For your luxurious seasonal needs, Canada Goose outfitted this lightweight top with a unique mix of fabric and tech. Thermal mapping places extra material in areas where you lose heat, like your core. These layers are backed by breathable, warm, hypo-allergenic merino wool. Merino also wicks away your sweat, ensuring this jumper keeps you feeling fresh. Cordura fabric reinforces critical areas. Rest easy, this sweater is built for activities like skiing.

There’s also a Canada Goose emblem on the left shoulder. Just in case anyone questioned its luxurious heritage. We suggest you wear this lightweight crewneck standalone for your more sophisticated outings.

What to look for in a sweater

Fabric and Warmth

Obviously, the right fabrics matter. If you’re looking for a warmer sweater, something wool or with a cotton-fleece blend is going to be more thermal. If you want breathability, stick to a cotton-poly blend – which can still be warm if it has a heavier weight. If you’re looking for a cooler, lightweight sweater, check the product title to see if those words are used in the description. Most of the sweaters above are mid-weights.

Most sweaters fit true-to-size, with ‘regular fit’ or ‘athletic fit’ being the most common. Fit and style are two different things. If you like your sweaters to fit big, size up. If you want them to fit normal, buy the size standard size you normally go with. For a more fitted style, buy your regular size and look for sweaters with ‘slim fits’ or ‘athletic fits.’

Crewnecks. Pullovers. Jumpers. Cardigans… There are plenty of sweater styles out there. What matters most is the type you’re looking for. Most of the sweaters we’ve chosen above are crewnecks. That means they have a well-defined ribbed stitching at their necks, sleeve cuffs, and lower hems. Wool sweaters can also have these features, but some wool sweaters come with different neck, cuff, and hem styles. Look for these attributes when choosing your sweater.

There it is. Our list of our favourite sweaters is now complete. Didn’t see the style you want? Check out the rest of our collection here
