  Decent and versatile softshell, especially is picked up on sale

  Over the years, I've used numerous softshells from Cloudveil, Rab, The North Face (Summit Series), Arc'teryx and Triple Aught Design and when I got the Columbia Cascade Ridge III - I was pleasantly surprised with it, even compared to the more expensive high end models I'm used to. The fit is nice, not an awkward boxy cut some cheaper shells are. The material is more stretchy than typical heavier-weight softshell, which may be an indication of less robust water resistance but since I don't use softshells in any serious rain it should do just fine for my use case. Because of the softer, stretchier fabric the jacket is very comfortable and is not noisy like some of my high-end stuff. Cascade Ridge III has pretty much all the design elements you may need in a functional softshell - the zippered chest pocket which is perfect for phone, wallet etc. the removable hood (easy to detach when you don't need it), cuff velcro, bottom cinch adjustment and roomy side pockets. The only improvements I would have liked to see would be water-resistant zippers, particularly on the chest pocket and a two-way main zipper, but at the price I got this jacket for, it is still a great value. The inside fleece is very soft and comfortable as well. The regular fit allows me to wear a medium weight sweater or fleece under the softshell with no issues. The stand collar is a bit large/high but it's also very functional as it seals out the wind nicely when zippered up to the top. Hopefully, the softer fabric stands up to wear over time, but for the price I paid (under Cad $100 after tax) I think the jacket is a great value even if it lasts only a few seasons. I probably wouldn't get it at full price though, but if you can catch it on sale - it's a great buy.
