    Suunto MC-2 NH Compass

I like the Suunto MC-2 sighting compass for many reasons. I considered the Global version but decided on the NH Northern Hemisphere Suunto made in Finland to a very high degree of quality and excellence. I’m partial to a liquid filled capsule for stable operation and jewel bearing needle. I wanted a compass with luminescent markings so I can find my way when darkness sets in during our short Winter days. Metric scale and imperial scale baseplate with magnifying lens. Bonus adjustable declination comes with mini screwdriver tool to adjust on the lanyard. The lanyard detaches and reattaches quickly when using it on the map. It’s water resistant and insensitive to atmospheric water pressure. It has a clinometer 0+_90° angle slope and on the case scale you can use on a topographical map which correlates to elevations. Operating temperature -30°C to +60°C all within 2° degrees of accuracy. Bonus to have a signaling mirror that allows sighting with notch and hole. The guide that is included in the box is very informative. When your out there it’s nice to know there’s a little something to guide you on the right direction. Stay safe and don’t dismiss the things that will get you back home safely.

    As described!

Haven’t had a chance to try it yet in the field, but it appears to be a well designed and constructed compass. Many great features. Not too big and lightweight.

    Poor quality

Received on time the compass. Suunto used to be one of the best compass brand. I know that some of their product received criticism over the year about quality control and this product doest make exception. The marking on the compass are off and dim. Plastic is brittle. I return the compass and bought a used 40 year old Suunto MC-1 for 1/4 of the price.

    Good compass

Very good quality, solid. Needle points north - it does the job!

    Suunto MC-2 NH Mirror Compass

Set to zero required no adjustments. Easy to read and accurate. Worked great on a recent kayak trip on the West coast. Compact, seems well made.

Great compass with a strange lanyard clip

There are multiple versions of this compass so make sure you're getting the right version for you. This is the Northern Hemisphere version, which has both metric and imperial markings on it. The compass is fantastic but I'm not sure what they were thinking with the lanyard design. Using the quick release clip looks like an easy way to drop the compass. Luckily, you can remove it and use the cord without the clip. This is a useful piece of emergency kit as the mirror doubles as a signal mirror and the magnifying glass could possibly be used to ignite tinder, but I have yet to actually achieving ignition using it.

I did not have to use it just yet

But it seems to work as it is supposed to! I keep it in my bag while ski touring.

    Good compass

Haven’t used in the field yet but has all the basic functions I was looking for to support year round navigation. The different MC models was confusing so I reached out to altitude sports and they clarified the minor differences, thanks altitude!

    Orienteering Compass

Haven’t used much yet but, look forward to using. Looks great and lots of features to learn.
