Art making and fly fishing can be seen as quite similar, given that each has a long history and both are driven by the processes that get you to the desired end result. One of the most process-oriented ways to make art, even more similar to fly fishing, has got to be traditional printmaking. The process Tyler goes through in hand making each print-the drawing, editing, choosing ink and paper, and the final physical act of printing-reminds him, through thoughtful repetition, requisite patience and well earned rewards, of time spent on the water, casting his line. Whether in the studio or on the water there are observations and decisions to be made, details to be paid attention to, and at the end there’s always what seems like a little bit of magic when the desired outcome is achieved. For him, peeling that first print off of the plate used to create it is enjoyable in the same way that watching a fish rise and eat a well-presented fly is. So many similar things go into reaching that last magical moment, and whether it is a fish rising to a fly and later being released from a net or a beautiful, finished print, that moment never gets old. “That moment is one that I find myself reliving when I’m not lucky enough to find myself in the studio or on the water. My passion for fly fishing and making art makes the whole entire process enjoyable, from start to finish, even when it doesn’t work out exactly as planned, but it is the final moment and the memories(or prints)that make me do it again and again.
